Do We Desire to Go Back to the 50's

Being a Baby Boomer, I remember 50's life.  Sure it has been idealized in movies and music, but, no doubt about it things were so much simpler back then.  It is ironic that we are just coming out of the Christmas holiday because that is where the differences seem so glaring to me; how Christmas and the holidays were celebrated and people's framework for looking at each other.

Christmas was a time when friends and family went shopping together, baked cookies together and had great work place parties.  Where I lived party lines were still in use.  I remember the build up of anticipation leading up to the holidays which were my favorite time of year.  Thanksgiving was a really big deal and so was Macy's parade.  Watching it, whether in person or on T.V., was a ritual.  We were delighted when it snowed because it gave us the opportunity to go sleigh riding or ice skating at the neighborhood pond.  No one sued anyone like they do today so it was easy for a landowner to open up his pond for the public's use.  Christmas lights were simpler then too.  There were the big screw in kind for outdoors only and then the smaller screw in type for inside.  People that really wished to be creative used only one color or two colors alternated.  A big extravagance was being able to have a few bubble lights or Santa Claus lights on your tree.  On Christmas Day friends and relatives would call each other and make the rounds visiting several people for a few hours each.  Everyone would have a present for us kids, usually some candy or an inexpensive toy.  We were always thrilled.

Christmas season never kicked off until after Thanksgiving and so we weren't saturated with it.  The Christmas cards started coming in like snow flakes in a snow storm for three weeks or so and were proudly and promptly displayed around the house.  An artificial tree was a novelty and people always had their favorite tree stand to go to and favorite type of tree to go pick out.  There was so much simple enjoyment being in the moment.

New Year's was not a night for happening clubs and driving around drunk.  People either went to Times Square to watch the ball drop or had gatherings at their house and had good old fashion fun; dancing, playing instruments and games and, of course, watching the ball drop was obligatory.  No one left and drove home intoxicated, although the booze flowed, they simply spent the night anywhere their bodies could land; sofas, sleeping bags etc.

I guess where this is all going is this:  do we really feel any better now having cell phones, laptops, artificial trees and emails than we did back then?  My guess is that there are many people that are searching and seeking a feel good patch to fill a void that we were guaranteed back then.  I see people at large feeling needy, lost and insecure and what I think that they are seeking is a sense of purpose and belonging and community.  I honestly believe that the good people of this country are burned out on competition and greed and deviousness.  Security, comfort, "family" and simplicity is a nationwide hunger.

Evidence for this supposition exists with the popularity of places like Active Rain and Twitter and Facebook.  I see people looking for connection and community and when they find it they gorge themselves.   It has come full circle in my opinion and the basic nature of people to feel needed and wanted hasn't changed.  In fact with all of the complicated devices and systems in place what I see and hear is people using them to find simple forms of connectivity.  Perhaps when we search for a foundation for our 2009 business plan these are things that we need to consider.  Give folks what they really need and want and they will come, and ....................STAY forever!

50's Christmas  GAYLE CHRISTMAS 1953 (CARDBOARD FIREPLACE AND STOCKING)

Proactive Thinking - New Paradigm for 2009!

O.k guys, this has been a long 5 day stretch.  The first thing that everyone asks is "Did you have a good Christmas?"  Well, the answer is, technically yes and then I guess yes, in an unconventional way.  You see Christmas Day I spent with some AR friends and yes, it was very good.  The rest of the long weekend? I have spent 18 or more hours a day on the computer and in consultation to try to improve my web presence and develop new paradigms for doing business in 2009.  It actually has given me quite a headache.  But, after some soul searching and internet searching this is my new approach:

  • Law of Attraction   Believe and it will come.  Disregard the mass opinion and know that there are people that want and need what I have.  Offer specialized service that is personal, has integrity and is about more than just making a commission.  Show loyal clients genuine appreciation.
  • No One Can Take Advantage of Anything Until They Are Aware of It     I have been doing internet advertising since 1999, but, I can see that the old waays just aren't as effective anymore.  I have been trying to rub minds with those that understand better net marketing and learn and tighten up my approach.
  • It Takes a Villlage  I have been spending time getting to know my fellow peers all over the country and also getting to know their opinions, outlooks and tools that they find effective.  This has been enjoyable.  The strong do survive, but, not alone.  I am a survivor.
  • Being Successful Means Delegating to Good Specialists  It's always fun to learn new things, but, I know that I cannot be good at everything. There are some things that I don't even have an interest in being good at.  I am finding good people that know their field and entrusting that part of my business to them.
  • Offer Something Besides Pessimism   Everyone has been impacted to one degree or another by the current financial scene.  I have lived long enough to know that "this too shall pass".  I can offer honesty without negativity and assist others; clients and peers in seeing what options are available to cope.  There are always options.  Maybe some of them put us out of our comfort zone, but, hey, you never grow without being out of your comfort zone some of the time.
  • Be Yourself    If you are good at what you do people will see.  It will bleed through every conversation.  Instead of a canned presentation or marketing hype, I am approaching people with my own personality remaining honest and forthright and more than anything else, I am doing more listening than talking.  People are banged up and bruised and feel comfort in having a genuine interaction with someone knowledgeable that is genuinely interested in their situation not in how much they will make from the conversation.
  • Offer Less, Deliver More   Perhaps I was lured into complacency by the easy market until 2007 and just rode along doing what was required.  Well, now it is important, if I am going to feel good about myself and my business, to go above and beyond.  To offer something extra.
  • (AN example:  A really terrific flat fee customer got in a jam and needed help.  I helped her without any additional compensation just because I knew that she needed help.  Now she has become a great referral source for me.)
  • Take Care of You First  Sounds selfish, right?  Wrong!  If you are feeling woried, tired and stressed that is how you will approach your business and what you will convey to clients.  Remember #1 Law of Attraction  If we are negative we attract negative.  Eat well, rest, do affirmations, keep yourself fit to mingle and do business.

So that is the basic outline of my fresh approach to business.  It is not refined enough to be specific; i.e. I will use this site for marketing, but, these are the overall principles by which I will begin to fill in a more detailed business plan for 2009.  If you would like to discuss this more please email me or follow me on www.Twitter.com as Marinabroker.  If you need technical help or some new venues for promotion, contact me also and I will be happy to share some very good resources that I have found.

Best wishes for a successful new year!

Ooltewah Small town feel- Big town amentities!

Wal-Mart Ooltewah Tn. 12/23/08

The once little town of Ooltewah Tennessee is growing in leaps and bounds as evidenced by this line of traffic and a full parking lot at the recently opened Wal-Mart.  During the real estate growth years, subdivision after subdivision was opened and sold.  With that came more banks and services. There are now at least five banks located in Ooltewah.  The first liquor store opened a few years ago.  There is Curves, several doctors offices, a shiping service, 3 pizza shops and numerous other things opening every day.  Within a 2 mile radius there are now 3 sub shops and 3 dollar type stores.  Now we have also gottenour own Sherwin Williams paint store.

With the new Volkswagon plant coming and new business arriving everyday the growth will continue into the furture.Despite all of these changes, Ooltewah Tn. still remains a wonderful place to live and it has lots of green areas.

How to Succeed Without Becoming a Technoholic!

I am believer.  You've got me.  I know -- things are changing and the technologically equipped will excel.  That being said I am a Baby Boomer and well, this internet thing started coming around strong in, oh, about 1990 or so.  Suffice to say that I was long since out of any kind of school.  Nonetheless, I was a little ahead of my generation and bought a PC and began to teach myself.  I was fairly proud of how well I was able to negotiate windows 3.0 and AOL, beginners version.  I was afraid, however, that somehow I would receive this huge bill from some mysterious place for being on the internet too long.  Back then you got an allotment of hours from AOL's part of your basic subscription and after that you paid by the hour.

Those were the days of shareware and I managed to download everything that I could get my hands on, I mean, I had a high capacity Tandy computer with a cool 66mz of power.  WHoa!  People would also admire my newly purchased black and white inkjet printer that I spent almost $400 to acquire.  I was big time.

Still I was painfully aware of the fact that there were so many younger than I that seemed to know so much more.  Well, I have marched along.  Traded up perfectly good computers for new ones and gone from Windows 3.0 to Vista and everything in between.  I remember designing and uploading my first web site.  It all seemed mysterious to me.  Actually, it still does.

Well, now we are in the age of internet 2.0, Twitter, social media, pay per click, blogging etc.  Frankly try as I may I just can't keep up with everything and I am beginning to feel like a dinosaur next to some of the younger agents that come trained with all the bells and whistles.

Now don't get me wrong.  I really don't need EVERY bell and whistle, but, how do I know which ones I do need?  Worse yet, once I decide, how to I know where to go to get all of them or do I just "turn it over"?  I am not particularly interested in mastering every new widget and tool tht comes along and yet I don't want to pay someone else who does ridiculous prices to just "trust" that they do.  What is the solution.

I think that I found one right here in the Rain; Danny Thornton and Rich Dansereau.  I trust them and I just recently found out that they are very knowledgeable in all things internet especially marketing tools and they will have my vote for internet marketing dollars spent on set up etc.  If you are like me and don't want to know how just why and need someone that you can trust to give you a hand call them; they're great!

What's a Girl to Do?

O.K. I have had anything but a traaditional Christmas and it keeps getting stranger and stranger.  Well, what have I been doing?   TWITTERING  OMG.  It had just never made any sense to me.  I had much better things to do with my life than care what 18M other people were doing.

I am not sure what inspired me.  I believe that I read a post by someone on here about Twiter again.   Being bored momentarily I made the fatal mistake of logging on.  I had set up an account months ago.  Well, this Twitter thing needs to come with a huge warning.  It is more addictive than heroin or crack.

I have been Tweeting everyone and have amassed over 400 followers since Chrictmas and now I think that I finally get it.  Unfortunately it has gotten me too.  I can't stay away and if you thought that the internet was bad, wait until you see how many meaty links of interest there are to follow.  I could click myself into oblivion.

So, now I am torn.  Do I twitter away and get smart and be unproductive except at tweeting or do I do the housework that I told myself I would do?  What IS a girl to do?!!!  Do they have meetings anywhere for Twitterholics?
