I am believer. You've got me. I know -- things are changing and the technologically equipped will excel. That being said I am a Baby Boomer and well, this internet thing started coming around strong in, oh, about 1990 or so. Suffice to say that I was long since out of any kind of school. Nonetheless, I was a little ahead of my generation and bought a PC and began to teach myself. I was fairly proud of how well I was able to negotiate windows 3.0 and AOL, beginners version. I was afraid, however, that somehow I would receive this huge bill from some mysterious place for being on the internet too long. Back then you got an allotment of hours from AOL's part of your basic subscription and after that you paid by the hour.
Those were the days of shareware and I managed to download everything that I could get my hands on, I mean, I had a high capacity Tandy computer with a cool 66mz of power. WHoa! People would also admire my newly purchased black and white inkjet printer that I spent almost $400 to acquire. I was big time.
Still I was painfully aware of the fact that there were so many younger than I that seemed to know so much more. Well, I have marched along. Traded up perfectly good computers for new ones and gone from Windows 3.0 to Vista and everything in between. I remember designing and uploading my first web site. It all seemed mysterious to me. Actually, it still does.
Well, now we are in the age of internet 2.0, Twitter, social media, pay per click, blogging etc. Frankly try as I may I just can't keep up with everything and I am beginning to feel like a dinosaur next to some of the younger agents that come trained with all the bells and whistles.
Now don't get me wrong. I really don't need EVERY bell and whistle, but, how do I know which ones I do need? Worse yet, once I decide, how to I know where to go to get all of them or do I just "turn it over"? I am not particularly interested in mastering every new widget and tool tht comes along and yet I don't want to pay someone else who does ridiculous prices to just "trust" that they do. What is the solution.
I think that I found one right here in the Rain; Danny Thornton and Rich Dansereau. I trust them and I just recently found out that they are very knowledgeable in all things internet especially marketing tools and they will have my vote for internet marketing dollars spent on set up etc. If you are like me and don't want to know how just why and need someone that you can trust to give you a hand call them; they're great!
Gayle, As a fellow baby boomer I can relate. The cool thing is however that in some respects I have passed my children in Internet technology. Now not on all things but I started working as my own webmaster about 7 or 8 years ago and then I started doing my own SEO. It has been a HUGE learning curve and there is ALWAYS something new to learn.
I don't know that I have followed Danny Thornton or Rich Dansereau but I will check their blog out. There's ALWAYS something new to learn!!
Gayle, I feel like a dinosaur as well with technology---and didn't know Danny and Rich did this type of thing until you told me--so thank you! I am always learning but it's not "tech" things which I don't find fun. Goodness, I've been on a computer about as long as you have :)
Gayle, thanks for the plug. It is kind of strange how we started up R & D Art. I have been a computer nut all my life. Most of it has been self taught and a lot by trail and error. There are things that I have been able to accomplish that I never thought that I could in the past. As we grow R & D Art, I am really curious as to how deep we get into it all.
Thanks for the kind plug. We both spend many hours everyday networking, learning, and trying to be on the crest of the newest trends and tricks. Whether website design, MLM, or something too new to even have a cool acronym, this is an exciting and rapidly evolving arena that we want to engage. The advent and rapid expansion of internet technology has led many a professional and a few entire professions to early retirement. Gayle, I have gotten to know both Danny and Rich over the past year on AR. They are both terrific guys. Doesn't surprise me that they've been so helpful. I've meet a few people - friends - from AR in person. Can't wait to meet these two...and you too of course! A great big AR gathering would be something special...wouldn't it?
